Pillar candles or column candles are beautiful. The simple design fits well with the décor of any room of your home. These candles make excellent gifts and center pieces. Pillar candles are easy to make and the supplies are inexpensive. This makes pillar candle making an excellent project, hobby, or money making project. Pillar candles burn for hours, ensuring you will get hours of enjoyment from your endeavors.

Molded pillars candles are one of the most common types of candles we can make. What I like about pillar candles is the fact that they can be made into any shape or size. Pillar candles are so easy and cheap to make and they can be made from simple household items such as sheet metal, aluminum, plastic, latex, and or silicone. The largest selection is typically available in sheet metal. Sheet metal and aluminum molds are generally very durable and should last for years with very little maintenance.

Most pillar candles have decorations on them that are embedded within the wax of the candle. These candles can be burned in a number of ways. The use of a candle holder is highly recommended to catch wax, stabilize the candle, and reduce the risk of fire while the candle burns. Some people simply burn pillar candles on plates or trays, but there are also candle holders specifically designed for pillar candles. Some of these candle holders use deep bowls to firmly seat the candle, while others are flat, with spikes which are designed to impale the candle, holding it in place.

In addition, the heat resistant property of the candleholder ensures your safety as it prevents fires from occurring.

What shape should the base of the pillar be?

I'm am doing an experiment. Using only normal playing cards, I can bend them to make pillars. I can make a maximum of 4 pillars. Now with the 4 pillars, I have to sustain as many textbooks as possible. I can only connect two edges of each pillar with a single piece of tape. Only normal tape is allowed and I can't tape the inside.

So... what shape should the base of each pillar be to sustain the most amount of books?

Since you don't have a height requirement, fold the cards in half length wise. Use a mold that is circular and roll the card around the round form until the card overlaps just about a 1/2 inch or so.

So you should have a cylinder shape around one inch high and maybe a 2 inch circle.

For even greater strength see if you can fold the card like a brochure in to three folds along the length of the card. Then it would only be about 3/4 inch high and real stout. Make sure you use a nice shape mold for making your cylinder. If you just try to hold it chances are you will get a bent over edge someplace and that will be your failure spot.

Now you got me thinking about something. If there is no height limits, just fold a card until it is about 8 eight times until you have a little one inch square.
Just lay those 4 solid squares on the table and load up your books. There is nothing there to fail since your talking about solid small blocks of cards! They might only be about 1/4 inch off the table, but you can't get any stronger than that.

If you have to use pillar for the cards, another very strong shape is to roll the cards into cone shapes, with about a 2 inch base and a one inch diameter top. The triangle shape of a cone is tremendously strong. You might have to experiment with rolling and creasing an edge to get to use all the material on the card in the making of the cone
