One common supply for hurricanes is a tarp. Although other materials are needed in case of damage from a hurricane, tarps are one of the more essential materials. In fact, when hurricanes hit the Gulf coast, FEMA has passed out tarps for free. But, instead of relying on a government organization, tarps can be purchased from hardware stores and numerous online distributers and manufacturers. Essentially, finding the right tarps to protect your home is a simple search on the web. But if you don't know which tarp is best for a hurricane, which do you know to choose?
Medium-duty polyethylene tarps are the most common tarps used for hurricanes. Although heavy-duty polyethylene can be used, medium-duty is still preferable. Although both types of tarps are made from the same material, heavy-duty polyethylene has a higher denier count. Both types of tarps, however, have the same protective properties, and this is important when protecting your home. Any polyethylene, or poly, tarp should be waterproof, as you want to protect the inside from water damage, mildew, or mold. Other properties pertaining to hurricanes include mildew, mold, and UV resistance, as all of these factors can damage the interior of your house.
A hurricane tarp is needed, essentially, in case of any damage done to your home during a storm. Often, moderate storms can even result in roof damage or a broken window, and tarps are needed in either instance to prevent water from getting inside and damaging the interior even more.
When applying a hurricane tarp, it should be put on the outside of the roof or window but the one applying it should try to not stand directly on the surface of the roof in case of slips or falls. The tarp should be applied directly over the hole, with both sides wrapped in two-by-four boards. The boards, with the tarp, are nailed to both sides of the hole. The two additional sides are nailed down with boards on top. Although this method gives full protection, other methods for tarping a roof are in use. Some hurricane tarps, in addition, come with adhesive on one side, but these don't always stay secured around the damage.
Once a tarp has been applied properly, it can last for about three months, which gives you enough time to contact a contractor to assess the damage. Medium-duty material can be found through any dealer of tarps and, in addition, other materials to secure at least two tarps should be on hand in your home.
