Mazda is expanding its line up, bringing its diminutive Mazda2 subcompact to the North American market in time for the 2011 model year. Based on the same architecture powering the all-new Ford Focus, the Mazda2 is its own beast and will likely appeal to Mazda3 enthusiasts, itself by far the best selling model in the Mazda fleet.

In addition to sharing the same platform, the Mazda2 and Ford Fiesta share front and rear wheel bearings, front bumper strut mounts and the front sway bar and links, according to Automotive News. Beyond that, everything in the Mazda2 is unique to that vehicle.

Thrifty Engine

Originally launched in 2007, the Mazda2 has been on sale in Japan, Australia and Europe, winning numerous car of the year awards and accolades since then. Powered by a 100 horsepower, 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, the Mazda2 is available with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.

Among the standard features included are 15-inch steel wheels with full wheel covers, all-season tires, matching body color door handles and power mirrors, air conditioning, power windows and locks, an AM/FM/CD/MP3 stereo with four speakers, audio auxiliary jack, tilt steering wheel, remote keyless entry system, rear window wiper/washer and 60/40 split fold-down rear seats.

Optionally, customers can add a rear bumper guard, wheel locks with the touring package only, all-s floor mats, cargo net, center console with armrest and auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass. Speaking of the touring model, that car will include upgraded cloth seat fabric, 15-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, rear roof spoiler, chrome exhaust tip, leather-wrapped steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls, trip computer, and an additional two speakers.

Seating is for four passengers, with 100 cubic inches of cabin space, while the cargo area offers 13.3 cubic feet, more than doubled when the rear seat has been folded down.

Gas Mileage

Fuel economy with the Mazda2 is projected to be 28 city, 35 miles to the gallon highway with the manual transmission or 34 mpg with the automatic. Those numbers are on the low end of the fuel economy range and well below the 30 mpg city, 40 mpg highway the Ford Fiesta offers. Even most midsize cars match the Mazda's highway mileage, an area where the Mazda2 definitely needs to see some improvement.

The base sticker price for the 2011 Mazda2 is $13,980 plus a $750 destination charge. Fully equipped models will sell for about $17,000, within the range of most loaded subcompact models. Mazda says the car will go on sale in July 2010.

How do I wire up aftermarket power mirrors?

I removed the stock power mirrors from my 95 astro conversion van and the problem is the stock mirrors have 4 wires and the new ones only have 3. Is there a schematic anyplace showing how the stock ones wire up and a schematic showing how to wire 3 wire mirrors? Thanks for reading!
One thing to note. The new set of mirrors did NOT come with installation papers. I guess the manufacturer assumes everyone can figure it out by themselves! The 3 wires coming from the new mirrors are red/ white/ black. The black is ground, white controls side to side movement, and the red controls up and down. The + & - need to be switched between ground and either ed and white to alternate the movement of the mirrors. The wires coming from the van have 4, with each side both having a blue & yellow for ground, and 2 different colors on driver & passenger side for the positive feed. if I connect the blue and yellow together, I have blown fuses. Any suggestions? Thanks!

the new set should have a diagram . if it don,t check the wires to see if any of them are the same color . if not the red or blue wires are usaly the hot wires white and black ground. each mirror shold have a hot ground and nutral the forth wire is not neededall the time. but some times you have to connect two wires together. which will be hot and nutral .
