The liquid bed liner is a great DIY bed liner. Our 1980 Plymouth pickup has had a self installed Plasti-Kote bed liner on it for two years. Before we installed it, the bed was rusty. This is what we did to bring it around... We went over the truck bed with an assortment of wire brushes and sandpaper. This loosened the rust and got the bed "roughed up" so the paint would stick better. Next, we put rust converter all over the rusty places in the bed. Some rust converter turns into primer, some doesn't. We used some of both kinds on our truck bed.
Before priming, we used masking tape to mask along the outside of the bedrails. We also taped newspaper down the sides of the truck on the outside to keep the primer and liner off the truck's paint. After that, we primed the bed with aerosol can primer to prepare the bed for the liner. The rest was pretty easy. We just put the liner on with a roller and paint brush. The liner was thick enough that it smoothed out well on its own.
Now after two years of hard work, the liner has several places where it has been chipped off. My recommendation would be to buy two cans of the liner paint and put a good thick layer on the sides. After that put several coats on the bed and wheel wells, letting it dry somewhat between coats.
