What would cause the driver's side tire rim to heat up?

Does anyone know what might cause the rim of the driver's side front tire, on a 1987 GMC Jimmy, to get so hot that you can't touch it. Also on an infrequent basis it will make a grinding or crunching noise when turning. Any help would be appreciated.
My vehicle does pull to the side but only when heavy pressure is applied to the brake. The brake pad is smooth in the center but jagged on the outer edges.

Sounds like you need brake repair or wheel bearing. The heat will come from friction between the brake and the rotor. In some case the brake pad will be worn to the metal and cause excessive heat. Damage to the rotor will result. If you look at the rotor you may discover grooves in it, if so that would indicate the above and you need repairs immeadiately.
