Removing Splash Guard from the Disposal?

Our splash guard (rubber thing that goes from the sink to the disposal) has rotted. We are having a really hard time getting the rubber unattached from the sink so we can replace it with a new one. We are using pliers and a screwdriver but the rubber ring just won't budge. Any ideas?

Just disconnect the disposal (under the sink) first and it should come right off. You'll need a screw driver to insert into the ring nut that attaches the unit to the underside of the sink.
When the unit is taken off of the sink, the rubber splash guard is relatively easy to remove, just pull it straight up and off.
