How can i pump a bicycle wheel?

I saw this little black thing sticking out of the steel part of the wheel & i tried to open it but it was impossible.

You pump the tire, not the wheel.

The "little black thingie" is a valve cap. It screws on and off of the valve stem. You don't open it, or pull it off, or try to find a flip top lid or I just don't know how you tried to do. It's just "lefty loos'ey, right'y tighty" Just like opening a jar.

Should only have to twist it off between your thumb and forefinger.
